Gilbert Melendez and Scott Coker present “Fight Night at the Tech”, the bay areas’ newest MMA , Muay Thai and Kickboxing promotion
Bay area combat sports has a long history including the days when Strikeforce was around from 1985 - 2013, headed by CEO Scott Coker. San Jose made MMA history when it hosted the first sanctioned MMA fight in California under the Strikeforce banner on March 10, 2006.
Now, former Strikeforce two-time Lighweight champion and UFC Fighter, Gilbert Melendez has teamed up with Coker to bring a new professional combat sports promotion to the Bay area. “Fight Night at the Tech” will be held in San Jose’s new Tech CU Arena, home to the professional Hockey team the San Jose Barracudas, on Saturday May 18, 2024 showcasing some of the Bay Areas top talent in MMA, Muay Thai and Kickboxing.
To truly separate themselves, Coker and Melendez chose a ring rather than the usual octagon that is typically seen in these multi-art events on the regional scene. Melendez hopped on the MMA Hour with Ariel Helwani stating, “aggressive fighters had trouble in that large cage some times or the circle so in the ring you can tactically corner the fighter so it makes for more action” when explaining why he deciding to go with the ring.
Scott Coker stated in an interview that “this promotion is for that young bull , those 3,4 fight professional fighters”, stating that we will also occasionally see those seasoned pro fights on the main card.
Melendez, Coker and Tenedora have a stacked card prepared for May 18th, including a Main Event from former Bellator Pro bantamweight and Bay Area fighter, Bobby Seronio III (4-0) taking on Brazils’ Carlos Murta (3-1). Former UFC Fighter Jessica-Rose Clark of the well-known Bay Area gym CSA takes on Patti Lee.
